Today wraps up the Bulletin's series of interviews with the May 5 primary candidates seeking their party's nomination to run for the Polk County Board of Commissioners. We were only able to talk with seven of the ten candi dates. We first wrote to each of the ten candidates in March requesting an interview, and then followed up with a half dozen phone calls in some cases. Sue Cochran, John Edwards Rick Gosnell, Henry Hunt singer, Jeannie Marlin, Bennie Smith and Grover Whitmire made themselves available. Of the three who did not Jesse Foy at first said he would try to find time in his schedule but finally said he did not want to be interviewed prior to the primary. Joan Skipper scheduled an interview twice, and both times had to leave unexpectedly. She says at all times she keeps one bag packed for trips south, and another packed for trips north, now that she's working as a tour director. Charlie Feagan never in any (Continued On Back Page) 'Rise And Shine' Begins In Schools "Rise and Shine," a free get- acquainted program for rising kindergartners, began last week at Sunny View School and Tryon Elementary. It will con tinue in all the Polk County elementary schools from 9 to 10 a.m. throughout the month of May according to the following schedule: Green Creek: (Mondays) May 4, May 11, May 18, May Mill Spring: (Tuesdays) May 5, May 12, May 19, May 26. Saluda: (Wednesdays) May 6, May 13, May 20, May 27. Sunny View: (Thursdays) April 30, May 7, May 14, May Tryon Elementary: (Fridays) May 1, May 8, May 15, May The hour-long, once-a-week program, now in its fifth year, is designed to introduce pre-kin- dergarten children to the schools they will attend next fall. It is also intended to help children feel comfortable with a variety of school employee s who have been enlisted to read stories aloud and describe their jobs. In addition to the school prin cipal, "Rise and Shine" children will meet kindergarten teachers, librarians, physical education teachers, the nutritionist, and the bus supervisor. Gounod, born in Paris in 1818, is best known for his opera, Faust. According to crit ics, Gounod created "a musical language of his own, one of extraordinary sweetness, of wondrous fascination." Like Mozart, his last work was a Requiem which was to be for himself. He collapsed while composing it and died three days later. The speaker will be the former pastor, the Rev. Dillard Davidson. Lunch will be in the new fel lowship building after the ser vice. The singers will be The Wright Family from Campo bello, Tommy Ingle from Columbia, S.C., The Standards, and Jean Edwards. The church is located on Hwy. 9 South, near Polk Cen tral High School. Everyone is invited. The Rev. Bruce John son is the pastor and David Jackson is choir director. - Community Reporter Revival Services at Emmanuel Baptist Revival services are now underway at Emmanuel Baptist Church which is located on Fox Mountain Road, near Colum bus.
